note for hosting the March Maple Madness Tour
I blame Laura Ingalls Wilder for this obsession: I have,
for as long as I can remember, always wanted to go maple
sugaring. However, that was not so easy growing up in New
York City as there were no sugarhouses located off our
subway line. When I moved to suburban Pennsylvania a few
years back, I thought the time had come for sure; but,
through a series of missed opportunities, I still had not
had the chance to go sugaring before I moved to the
Cleveland area this summer. So the rain this past Saturday
and a sprained foot were not going to keep me from my chance
to go sugaring this year! Despite the rain and pain, it
was a wonderful experience, thanks in large part to the
lovely people in your readership area.
We first stopped at the Swine Creek Reservation, where
the staff and volunteers were so helpful in explaining the
different equipment and techniques. We then drove around a
bit, enjoying some of the different local stores and, most
especially, scenery (in other words, we got lost). Then we
made our way to Creekside Maple, and were just taken aback
by the beauty of the sugarhouse, the setting, and the
hospitality.
On behalf of my brother, my brother’s wife, and my
co-worker who attended the March Maple Madness events with
me, I want to thank all those we met for sharing their
passion with us, not to mention sharing tastes of the
delicious syrup they produce! A sunnier day would have made
the day even more perfect, but my first maple sugaring event
was definitely worth the long wait!
