A Family Farm Diary - Day # 2

Introduction - Day #1  - Day #2   - Day #3

I had to clean up the house, so got busy with that right away Wednesday morning. I also got some work done on the computer and tried to get caught up with some over due laundry. I could work at the computer all the time and still have projects waiting for me. We use this computer just like a tool. It has become very important to us on the farm as many records are kept on it. The new combine has a computer in it. It can give out a bunch of information while it is working in the field. Amazing! It also has a field map in it, that when it is connected to a satellite, it can read out just what parts of the field are yielding higher, what parts of the field are in need of higher nutrient levels, etc. Ours is not connected yet, but maybe we will some day. Agriculture is truly high tech! Much more than the average person thinks it is. Tom and Max have always felt it is important to feed the soil as well as we feed the livestock or ourselves. If it is lacking a nutrient, it will not produce as capable as it can. So fertilizing is a huge expense for us. At least on our farm, nutrients are not lacking in the soil, like some researchers would like you to believe. With these kinds of yields, it is not true, other wise the soil would not yield a crop at all.

After the guys finished the beans and wheat for the year, it started to rain. We have had a gorgeous harvest season! The weather has been beautiful. Today is the first day of rain since we started. We need it! It is becoming dry and the new wheat seeds could use a drink. So this is good timing! Max & Tom changed the header of the combine from the bean reel to the corn head. I am sending pictures along so you can see the difference. After going through the combine, checking all the parts, lubricating bearings, checking oil, and refueling (this is a daily event in order to keep the machinery running at peak performance), they started the corn. The field they started was right behind Kate and Max's house, so the girls and I went over for supper. We rode in the buddy seat and watched! Girls loved it.

Took girls home around 9PM for bed.
